What should you bring to the maternity ward?

Preparation of your things for the maternity ward begins around your 8th month of pregnancy. First, plan for a bag for the delivery room and a suitcase for your hospital stay. Plan for a suitcase for your baby to easily find everyone's belongings.

How to dress for going to the maternity ward?

The departure for the maternity ward can be more or less rushed. If it's your first child, you'll have a few hours, for the majority, before meeting your little treasure! Plan for comfortable clothes to be at ease and move freely. If the baby is taking its time, you'll have the right to walk around so plan for comfortable shoes.

Before leaving for the maternity ward, take the time to shower and eat. Bring water and apple juice as some maternity wards allow drinking during labor.

Mom's things for the maternity ward

For the delivery room, a travel or sports bag will be sufficient with the following items:

  • 1 nightgown or 1 large t-shirt
  • 1 jacket
  • 1 mist spray
  • 1 hair tie
For even more comfort, plan for a night light to dim the room and create your own bubble. Bring your portable speaker to play your favorite music. A comb to hold tightly in your hand can also help you better manage the pain of contractions. Depending on the maternity ward, snacking may be allowed, think of dried fruits. If you practice acupressure, then don't forget your bottle of massage oil.

What's needed for the second parent?

Let's not forget, however, the second parent or accompanying person, who will be your best ally and who will be just as eager as you to meet the baby! Let's also bring them some comfort for this emotionally rich period.

For the delivery room:

  • Snacks (if it lasts a long time)

Increasingly common, the second parent can naturally stay for the duration of the stay with the baby and their spouse. To make this adventure even more enjoyable, don't forget:
