How to prepare baby's bag for the maternity ward?
The arrival of your baby is prepared a few weeks in advance. You're probably wondering when to pack your maternity bag if this is your first child? It is recommended to prepare your bag and the baby's bag in your 8th month of pregnancy. Plan for the newborn essentials to slip into the bag specially designed for the delivery room for the baby's first outfit without forgetting anything.
Your baby's small items to put in the maternity bag
Essential newborn items for baby
For the delivery room, you can put in your maternity bag:
1 newborn kit including
- 1 baby cardigan
- 1 bodysuit
- 1 pajama
- 1 pair of booties
- 1 hat
For the maternity stay:
- 6 to 8 comfortable bodysuits
- 3 cardigans
- 8 velour pajamas for example
- 4 pairs of booties or socks
- 1 hat
- 1 light or warm sleeping bag depending on the season
- 1 baby blanket
- 6 newborn bibs
- 1 comfort toy (optional, mom's advice, take 2!)
- 2 super cute hooded bath towels
- 1 pack of muslin cloths
- 1 toiletry kit (cleansing gel, thermometer, liniment, ...)
- 1 pack of diapers (3-5 kg) if not provided
How to dress your baby when leaving the maternity ward?
You are now ready for your stay at the maternity ward! But how to dress baby when leaving the hospital? Whatever the weather, you will need a complete newborn kit or a warm birth outfit, with a hat to cover their head well. Even if it's nice and warm, your newborn is sensitive to drafts and is still chilly. Plan for a soft blanket or a baby nest to keep them warm in their car seat until you reach the car. In winter, opt for a warm sleeping bag and the baby nest in case of sharp drops in temperature.
For the car, don't forget to bring the car seat or infant carrier. Is the sun shining brightly in the sky when you leave? Plan for car window socks or a classic sun shade to protect your child from the sun's rays during the journey. If you forget this car accessory, no worries, simply wedge a towel, or even better a muslin cloth, in the window.
